Sseko began as a dream: to help women in Uganda attend university by providing them with financial support. It has since evolved into a fashion with customizable footwear, bags, and accessories – all handmade in Uganda and other parts of Africa. The footwear itself is made of leather and can be accessorized with a variety of ribbons or decoration allowing every woman to express her own creativity. Sseko is hoping to help end the cycle of poverty for women in East Africa and they offer employment to women of all ages and walks of life, including classes for money management, public speaking, interview skills, and much more. The classic Sseko “Ribbon Sandal” is available on the site but they have recently launched some new items on trend for Spring including d’orsay flats, sliders, and beautiful tote bags that are a must-have for the Festival season. What began as a small idea has turned into a very big reality.
